Things that inavlidates wadhu

-

Seven things invalidate wuḍūʾ:

1. urinating; and apparently included in the ruling of urinating is the similar moisture that comes out after urinating and before performing istibrāʾ;

2. defecating;

3. passing wind of the stomach and the intestine from the anus;

4. sleeping, which means that simultaneously one’s eyes do not see and one’s ears do not hear; however, if one’s eyes do not see but his ears hear, his wuḍūʾ does not become invalid;

5. things that cause one to lose his mind, such as insanity, intoxication, and unconsciousness;

6. istiḥāḍah of a woman(menstrual bleeding)

7. janābah; and based on recommended precaution, all things for which one must perform ghusl.

(A note to Usuliyyoon):
All major marājiʿ today agree on these seven things that invalidate wuḍūʾ. The difference comes only in details (e.g. definition of sleep, or precaution in some cases).

Regarding (1) Urine, (2) Feces(defecating), (3) Wind, (4) Semen / janābah, (5) Sleep

Zurara asked Imam al-Baqir(as) and Imam Jafar(as):
“What invalidates wuḍūʾ?”

They replied:
“Whatever comes out from your two lower outlets — the anus and the penis — such as stool, urine, semen, or wind; and sleep that causes the mind to depart.
All sleep is disliked in this regard except if you can hear sounds while your eyes are closed.”

Regarding things that cause one to lose his mind, such as insanity, intoxication, and unconsciousness

Amir ul-Momineen(peace be upon him) said:

“When sleep mixes with the heart, wuḍūʾ becomes obligatory.”

note:
Allama Majlisi in the footnote of very next page says:
Fainting, insanity, and intoxication are like sleep, for they cause the body to relax according to the Sunnah. All of them are natural signs indicating that wuḍūʾ has been invalidated, similar to passing wind...

Regarding Istihadah

(note to the reader)

“Istihādah (menstrual bleeding) is a broader topic that will be covered in a dedicated thread. However, on a general standpoint, istihādah invalidates wuḍūʾ, and in cases of heavy or unusual bleeding, ghusl or special rules may apply, which will be explained through hawadith in the thread section on ‘Haydh (Menstruation).’”
